Early 1900s Palace-Seafront hotel-Siracusa-Ortigia Island. The Neo-Classical mansion is located on the seafront on the island of Ortigia – the historic / cultural city of Syracuse which in 2005 was awarded the title of World Heritage Site by Unesco, for its great wealth and important historical, archaeological and ancient Renaissance and barocco landscape. The building was constructed in the early 900′s by a notable Syracuse, the Cavaliere Francesco Boccadifuoco, who between 1912 and 1960 was President of the Chamber of Commerce of Syracuse, the National Federation Foreign trade and Banco di Sicilia. Boccadifuoco chose to build his palace on the east coast of the island just 20 meters from the sea, where the particular forward position gave a spectacular view of the sea to the east, giving the sensation of being on a ship whilst residing inside the walls of the palace.
The island of Ortigia still retains a rare peculiarity: the tourist can enjoy a crystiline sea with swimming access, whilst being in the city, surrounded by monuments that date back to the time of Ancient Greece, through numerous invaders and bringing us to the present day. In front of Palazzo Boccadifuoco are apparent remains of a beach that was accessible up to 60 years ago and that today could be restored thereby adding value to the property.
The building, currently used as a hotel, spreads over four floors with a basement, giving a total area of 1,900 square meters. The principle facade facing the sea, has a terrace, with a view that spans 360 degrees from the sea to the roofs of the buildings of the island, that could be converted to a roof garden.
The building’s architecture reflects the ground rent and floor plan of the time and has a large open space that looks onto San Giacomo, where, upon request, it would be possible to make an additional access to the sea.
Syracuse is currently experiencing its “nouvelle vogue”, with an increase in tourism that has seen the number of summer visitors soar and all the facilities completely booked. The availability of mini electric buses, go-bikes as well as four fully equipped solariums next to the monuments and museums, has resulted in the national news channel, TG1, defining it as one of the most popular destinations in Sicily.
